Theater People
I’m gonna compliment myself, which I I think I don’t often do you can tell me if I’m constantly complimenting myself But I feel like we cover a lot of ground on your daily Lex there’s a podcast I want to love that I’m really like and it’s fly on the wall with Dana Carvey and David Spade and It used to be they would talk to SNL related people about SNL and now it’s really they talk to famous people and sometimes talk To them about SNL, but although I love Dana Carvey the performer Boy, he is a crappy podcast host and Dana if you’re hearing this, I’m sorry But the issue is really that he just tells the same stories over and over again Dana Dana Lapses into the same impressions and then does a bunch of tells the same stories again and again and then he got David Spade who Doesn’t interrupt quite as much but still has like key stories I’ve heard him tell the story about when David Bowie wanted to take on the receptionist role in David’s famous sketch and you are and this is regarding and he wanted David Spade to play Bowie and Bowie to play the David Spade part and Spade wasn’t into it all that I mentioned all this just because I you know They do an hour a week I do about an hour a week of this show roughly and I feel like I don’t repeat myself Nearly as much as they do you may feel free to disagree with that as well.
But anyway, let’s talk theater stuff your Daily Lex I I’m just gonna keep all my thinking noises in there, but I I think of theater people I don’t think of myself as a theater person I grant that I do Improv a whole lot and that I’ve been talking a ton about Avenue Q through the audition process the rehearsal process and other show Process, but I don’t think of myself as a theater person I think of myself as a theater adjacent person But theater people often talk about post show blues and I was I’m thinking recently about like what’s my next show gonna be?
Where my wife and my kid do a lot of shows they go back to back to back to back most of the time I don’t mind if I have a break in there Like I welcome the free time and then I miss him But I am as Avenue Q is drawing to a close this weekend.
We still have four shows We have more shows left than shows we’ve done But as you know as it’s coming, I’m thinking boy I don’t know what the next thing will be that all I’ll be doing on that front I love what I’m doing with comedy sports It is definitely my passion and it’s the it’s it’s the theater experience that I love the most but you know Our theater holds at a max maybe 50 people And sometimes we do shows for 10 or 15 people and I will say this we do great shows if we have 10 or 15 people There nobody half-asses it even if it’s a tiny crowd But it’s it’s more fun when you have like a giant audience when we’re doing shows of Avenue Q the theater holds 500 people We’ve had you know 480 plus each night thus far We have one show coming up this weekend a matinee on Saturday that looks pretty spare so far pretty sparse That’s the word.
I meant but I think hopefully it’ll follow but it’s still half full which means you’re playing a 250 people That was an optimistic lens.
But you know, so I’m thinking about what I’m gonna do next I know that my passion is I want to do shows that I love Like if you do a show that you don’t really get into Then it feels like work and I like it when it feels like play more than work And so I’ve been thinking about different shows that are coming at different theaters and like The theater where I’m doing Avenue Q is doing Fiddler on the Roof Fiddler on the Roof.
Not a true difficultly Terrifically, that’s not even a word not a traditionally hilarious show And like I think I could maybe I played a son once I think now I’d have to play one of the adults and like That’s a heavy show and I think I’d be doing it more because of like the audience’s love for it versus my own like maybe I just want to do comedies and that’s okay Another theater is doing the Addams Family musical and like could I do Gomez?
Can I get the Nathan Lane esque Spanish?
Yeah, if you don’t know the show I’m trying to imitate Nathan Lane Spanish accent Which is hilarious in its own way if I auditioned for Gomez and the Addams Family I think I would I would go with just a mustache to to capture Gomez for the audition and that I have to come home and shave so I don’t know I’m thinking about and The theater where I’m doing Avenue Q is doing a production of Elf the musical later on and like I’d love to play buddy the elf And in fact the guy who played Brian the character I’m doing an Avenue Q on Broadway played buddy the elf on Broadway But I also wonder maybe now I’m too old to be buddy the elf I don’t know something about my next show me and I genuinely have no idea I’m really torn on that fiddler question because I think I could do it I just don’t know if I should do it like like maybe maybe I don’t need the dramatic I think that I have acting chops I think that I can sort that out and do those deeper characters But I think if it’s if it’s more my jam to do the funny stuff Maybe I can focus on that and that’s okay, too.
I don’t know So anyway, I’m thinking out loud and that’s what I do on this podcast and try not to repeat stories too much Anyway, enjoy the rest of your Thursday Lex
