In this house, we alternate who gets up early with the kids.

I had initially proposed we do every other week.

I have a week where I get up early and then Lauren has a week where she gets up early.

A couple days into the first week, Lauren was like, no, that doesn’t work because she had the first week and she got tired.

So, a couple different things have been going on.

Number one, we’ve been getting up at six because that’s when Liam gets up and it’s a way, one, to make sure he actually wakes up because his alarm clock can be blaring and he’ll sleep through it, although he’s getting better about that.

And then it’s keeping sleepy Liam awake, keeping him moving, keeping him processing so that he gets dressed and eats breakfast and brushes his teeth and combs his hair, gets his bag ready to go and can get out the door.

He’s capable of doing all those things.

Last year, he did them all on his own.

It’s hard for him to do it when it’s early and he only wants to go to bed later and we have his bedtime at nine so he can get up at six and he’s still so sleepy.

He wants a later bedtime.

We want him to be more functional in the morning.

So, anyway, we’ve gone right now to every other day where one of us gets up at six to urge him along.

He’s been working hard to prove that he can be awake and do these things in hopes of earning a later bedtime.

So, we’ve been negotiating back and forth on that.

He’s currently up to 905 and today was a big test where I was going to get up at 615 instead of six to see how far along he was.

He should be downstairs having breakfast by 615 because if that keeps working, then I can sleep later and Lauren can too on her days.

So, a couple problems.

Number one, today was pouring rain so I had to drive the other two kids to the bus and drive him to the bus but that means on days when I do that, I have to be up early enough to drive them to the bus anyway which is 622.

So, although I had hopes of pushing my wake up until 630, that doesn’t really work if I have to drive the older two to the bus anyway.

But if I can consistently get up at 615 or 620, that’s still better than six if I know that the kids are doing the things they need to do.

Fine.

Every once in a while, there’s some trading on who’s going to get up.

I had a late night this week and Lauren had a late night this week that were not before our early days.

So, Lauren asked if we could swap which of course made total sense.

When you’re going to swap for me and for Lauren, you got to figure out what are you going to do to not hear the other person or not hear the kids when you want to sleep in when the other person’s getting up at six something.

I’ve been using white noise.

Lauren sleeps with earplugs.

I cannot imagine sleeping with earplugs.

I’m sure it’s also not safe to sleep with earplugs but that’s a separate story.

So, yesterday, it wasn’t my day.

I got to sleep in and then Ani comes in which never happens.

She’s like, are you in there?

I’m like, yes, what?

And I had taken my pill that helps me sleep later the night before since it was my night to sleep late.

So, I felt groggy like post NyQuil style.

I’m like, what?

And she’s like, Sierra dropped a glass and it shattered and she needs help in the kitchen.

I’m like, see if you can find mommy because that’s step one.

Ani did find mom.

Mom went down and dealt with it but of course, I heard all this so I had to really work hard to get back to sleep and I had been in a conversation, whatever.

So, I get back to sleep.

Later yesterday morning, I’m in the kitchen.

I’m loading the dishwasher.

At first, I unloaded it then I loaded it and then Lauren’s heading back upstairs.

I take a step and I scream.

I just scream.

I believe the word I screamed was ow, in fact.

And Lauren’s like, what was that or what just happened?

And I said, glass, I assume.

And indeed, I had a little bit of glass that had been missed in the cleanup and I fault no one.

It’s hard to clean up glass but I had a little bit of glass in my foot.

That sucked and Lauren and I find the glass in my foot and we get it out.

And then it still hurts.

It still hurts.

Then it stops hurting but it still hurt this morning.

And I looked at it and I try to just kind of brush at it a little bit basically, see if there’s anything else there I could get out.

And then I was like, I guess I should make an appointment with the podiatrist because I don’t have any glass in my foot.

So, I go back to my podiatrist and that appointment is for many hours later.

When that rolls around, I haven’t had any pain in forever and I’m like, I guess I could cancel this appointment but I’m better safe than sorry.

So, I go and it’s so pain-free that it takes me a minute to remember which foot had the problem.

And I show the doctor where the foot is.

It was at the end of my leg as it turns out.

I show the doctor where on the foot the issue was.

He’s like, there’s nothing there now.

And I’m like, oh, well, it was bleeding all over the place yesterday when I stepped on glass and I got, I think, a little something else out today and I think now I’m fine.

It’s like, I can barely even see the cut.

And I’m like, well, it was glass.

It was small.

And he looks and proclaims me healthy and says, if I have any pain in that foot, he’s there every day except Sunday.

So, just call and he won’t even charge me for another appointment.

I can just come in and he’ll get whatever glass he can find out because right now, he doesn’t see any.

I’m pretty sure there is none.

I’m pretty sure we got it all out and the appointment was a waste of time.

But yeah, it’s the weekend now.

So, I can sleep late two days in a row.

How exciting is that?

And actually, I think Lauren’s day is Monday.

I can sleep late three days in a row.

Sleep late on Saturday, late on Sunday and, oh boy, this is exciting, folks.

Anyway, I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

I have a much busier weekend than usual.

Here are some of the things I’m doing this weekend.

Tonight, I’m going to go see a play.

I really have to figure out what time that play is and figure out what time I have to leave to go see that play.

Tomorrow, I have my ref debut where I’m the referee in comedy sports.

Sunday night, I’m going to see Ben Folds in concert.

And Monday night, which is not the weekend, but is the next day, I have another elf rehearsal, which will be my second one.

So, anyway, that’s my life.

I hope yours is equally awesome.
