In Favor Of Nouns
I’m going to get to the next track from the new Liam and Lex album in a moment, but just a fun thing.
You know, one of the perks of the trainer I’m working with as I lose weight is you can send him the menu of a restaurant you’re going to and get his feedback on what to order before you go.
And he’s like, that way I can take the decision making out of your hands.
I’ll help you order something that fits in with your calorie goals, whatever.
And I’m going out with some friends this weekend.
And I said to the menu, and I was like, you know, I really think you should tell me I should get the burrata pizza with a laughing emoji because he would never suggest I get that.
And a couple hours later, he wrote back saying, yeah, you should get that because you need a refeed day.
I love refeed days.
Refeed days are when I’ve lost too much too fast.
You want to make sure you don’t hit starvation mode.
So there’s days where you just you take in extra calories, you get more to maintenance than loss just for a day or two to help your body figure it all out.
And then you go back.
But I am down more than 35 pounds, and I’m quite proud of it.
I was at Fiddler rehearsal the other day, getting measured for costumes.
And I never had said this to a costume person before.
But I was like, hey, just so you know, I’m down at that time, like 33 or 34 pounds from mid-November.
And I’m going to keep losing before this show in June.
So, you know, you should just be aware.
Whatever you measure now, I’m going to be even thinner later.
And they were like, awesome, we’ll note it and not get anything for you yet.
We’ll just know to measure you again closer to the time.
Very cool.
Anyway, the next song on the album.
Let’s talk about it.
It’s not this song.
Your daily Lex.
Although that song is on the Lex Friedman album, the Internet’s out.
My first album.
My second album is called A Sentiment That’s Almost True.
And that was mostly just me testing my own knowledge.
The next song from my album with Liam, or really Liam’s album with me, is Pronouns.
So, you know, again, we’re always thinking about what we can write.
And we knew we wanted another song.
Liam wanted this album to have 13 or 14 tracks.
And we were one short.
And we were thinking about, like, what are cool issues we could write about?
And we decided to write a song about pronouns.
Some people hate that folks choose their own pronouns.
We’re not fans of that.
We’re not fans of the people hating it, I mean.
We’re totally fans of people, you know, using the right pronouns for themselves and identifying them.
And, you know, in this one, Liam shares all the pronouns for everybody in our family.
It may surprise some and will clearly not shock others to know that there are a variety of pronouns used in my very own house.
As Liam was saying, he and I use he, him.
Lauren and Sierra use she, her.
Ani, my oldest, uses they, them.
And there are folks who struggle with, but they, them sounds plural.
We can’t use plural or refer to single person, even though it happens all the time in language that we use they for that purpose anyway.
Also language evolves, as do humans.
And so we should handle that.
So the point of the song is to respect people’s chosen names and pronouns.
And there are lyrics in there that Liam, I think, sings really nicely where he talks about, if respecting folks is woke, that I’m the wokest guy you know.
And at the end, he improvised a little spoken, I’m woke, that cracks everybody up who’s heard the song, as far as I can tell.
It’s quite funny to hear Liam go, I’m woke.
This is another song on the album where Liam wrote some vocal lines that required my singing really high.
Boy, that was fun.
So you’ll hear me singing really high with some harmonies with him.
But I think actually Liam did a great job with the orchestration on this one.
Like this is a driving rock song.
It is not at all what I had in mind when I sat down to write the lyrics.
But it’s very much what I would consider Liam’s sound to be.
He likes a rock and roll, hard rocking sound.
And I think he gets it here.
Anyway, here’s Pronouns from the new album Blueprint, available wherever you listen to songs. I’m Liam, I use he, him, those are the pronouns I choose.
My dad’s Lex, and he, him are also the ones that he’ll use.
My sister uses she, her, my mom is just the same way.
My sibling uses they, them, and I really want to say, call people what they want to be called, use the names that people request.
He, him, she, her, they, them, me, you, respecting identities is the best.
Some people may use he, they, and that’s of course their choice.
And others use any pronouns.
We gotta honor their voice.
Call people what they want to be called, use the names that people provide.
He, him, she, her, they, them, me, you, let humanity be your guide.
Be a pronouns pro, tell everyone you know.
If respecting folks is woke, then I’m the wokest guy you know.
All people are just people, treat them with respect.
Share pronouns, use pronouns, that’s how humans connect.
Call people what they want to be called, use the names that people request.
He, him, she, her, they, them, me, you, respecting identities is the best.
Be a pronouns pro, tell everyone you know.
If respecting folks is woke, then I’m the wokest guy you know.
You know.
You know.
I’m the wokest guy you know.
You know.
You know.
I’m woke.
He really made me sing very high.
Anyway, go listen.
Blueprint.
Lex.
