A million years ago, there was this short-lived TV show with a great cast and a great premise called Pushing Daisies. The main character, Ned, had this ability where if he could touch a dead person and they would come back to life for one minute. And as long as he touched him again, they would die again, and that would be that. But if he didn’t touch them in that 60-second period, then somebody else nearby would die, which was quite a power for this person to have. And it was a hilarious and musical show often. Not a musical show, but it was very musical. You get it. Great, great stars, and also like great guest stars and cameos and stuff. Fantastic. And Ned, the main character, was a pie maker. The show ended all too soon. There was one episode one time where two characters started singing Birdhouse in Your Soul by They Might Be Giants, which was of course very exciting for me as a person who loves They Might Be Giants. But so, you know, that show went off the air and years went by and nothing happened. And then one time, Liam and I needed a new show to watch, and so we watched all of that over a couple months, I guess. And he liked it. And so, when we were in the process of creating this new album, Blueprint, one of the ideas we had for a thing we could write a song about was a pie maker. So the pie maker in the song Pie Maker, which we’ll talk about today, is not Ned from Pushing Daisies, but he was inspired by Ned from Pushing Daisies. Anyway, theme song. Your Daily Lex. Why sometimes is there an extremely long cold open on this show and other times there isn’t? I don’t know. Shout out to a couple different listeners who asked me for updates on what is making the Fiddler experience so bonkers. Here’s the short version. We’re not given rehearsal schedules in advance. They just want us to hold four days open each week, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Sundays, and tell us. They said we’d give us a week notice. What they mean is on Sunday, they want to tell you who’s called that day, Sunday, and Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. But that’s not a week notice for any of those days. It’s less than a week notice. So they very often don’t tell you until the day of or the day before. We got the call for today. Today. And they’re like, just hold all those days open. And no, that’s not how it works. And sometimes we might call you and not use you, so don’t be mad. No, I will be mad. My time is precious to me. You can’t do that. That’s not the only problem, but it’s one of the problems. And it’s one that I’m talking to the director about in person tonight, so we’ll see how that goes. Anyway, as I said, we’re in the pie section of the album Blueprint by Lehman Lex, available wherever you listen to music. You heard 3.1459, which was instrumental. You heard pie, P.I., about math with the live drums. And now it’s Pie Maker, a song not about Ned from Pushing Daisies, but about a person who makes pies. There are two more tracks after today, and they both mention pie in different ways. One mentions a bunch of food, and one is specifically about pizza. So those are your, not spoilers, but previews, I guess. I also would say that I think this song has what I would consider quintessential Lex lyrics for a Lehman Lex song. I don’t mean to imply that they are basic, I’m not insulting myself, but this is what I think of when I think about writing songs for Liam. It’s silly, but also a little bit silly in a stupid sense, kind of, in a way that I don’t mean insulting, and also funny. Basically ridiculous, just riding the line of ridiculousness while expressed plaintively. That’s my own analysis of myself. Anyway, here is the song, Pie Maker. I think it’s called Pie Maker, not The Pie Maker. I would have called it The Pie Maker, but Liam gets final naming rights. So yeah, it is indeed called Pie Maker. Enjoy, I hope. The pie maker’s back in the kitchen, he works hard with flavors galore. There’s a peach pie, a plum pie, a cookies and crumb pie, and soon there will be plenty Cause he’s the pie maker, he’s the sly baker, he’s the pie maker and he’s making pies. Pie maker, he’s making pies. The pie maker loves making new pies, he’ll make pumpkin and apple no doubt. But he’ll also make coffee and cheese mixed with toffee, and honeycomb with brussel sprout. Cause he’s the pie maker, he’s the sly baker, he’s the pie maker and he’s making pies. Pie maker, he’s making pies. Peanut M&M’s, he’ll use them, my friends. Day old hot dog buns, you’ll say yum yum yum. Just expired mayo, it will still taste okay though. Chicken a la king, it’ll make a pie just sing. He can make them all taste great in pie. You’ve got to give the pie maker a try. He’ll make you a pie out of melons, he’ll make you a pie out of peas. These flavors sound odd, but you’ll say oh my god, I’d like some more slices please. Cause he’s the pie maker, he’s the sly baker, he’s the pie maker and he’s making pies. Pie maker, he’s making pies. Another one, where he really made me sing hi. The me of course being Lex.
