Purple
I know what you’re thinking, I know what you’re wondering, and yes, the answer is yes.
I will give you an update on how I’m doing memorizing my lines for the play I’m in. I’m doing really well.
Like, I started memorizing early.
As you know, I recorded all my lines, I listened to them a lot.
Then I recorded a separate track that was just like my longer monologue from the show.
And I would say I could do the play today.
I would not be word perfect, I might make a mistake or two on a couple lines like that, I would miss or drop, but I could do the play today if I had to.
I have plenty of time to get better.
And this is a tricky spot to be in, because it’s December 3rd as I record these words, the show’s not starting until January 17th.
I cannot rest on my laurels.
First of all, I don’t own any laurels.
Second of all, you know, you can’t get sloppy, because I’m not perfect yet, so I’ve got to keep drilling it.
I will say my family is increasingly annoyed that I do this, and I’m no longer asking them to run lines with me.
Lauren had said even before the rehearsal process started that she would run lines with me any time, but she never wants to, which, by the way, I don’t blame her.
It’s no fun to run lines with somebody else, unless you really need that sort of thing.
I enjoy doing it with my kids and stuff when they ask, because you can have some fun with it, but I get not wanting to do it.
And Lauren was like, yeah, I’ll do that, and then every time I ask, she’s like, well, not right now, but yes.
So I found the way to get Lauren to run lines with me was to corner her in the car when we were driving some long distance.
Hey, here’s my friend, why don’t we run Act 2, Scene 1, whatever.
Liam’s run lines with me more than anybody else in the house.
When Ani was over Thanksgiving, Ani ran lines with me, which was very nice of him.
Sierra hates doing it, and I think it’s done it once.
But I mostly use my recordings, but it’s going well.
And my co-star in the show has memorized one or two scenes, but it’s like, oh my gosh, you’ve memorized everything.
I’m like, hey, I was crazy about it.
I was really panicking about it.
I felt like there was too much to learn, so I started very early.
But I’m way ahead of the game.
You are not behind, I’m ahead.
That’s different.
It’s not a competition.
But if it is, I’m winning.
I didn’t say that.
I thought I didn’t say it.
I didn’t think it either.
But yeah, so it’s a good place to be, though.
Like I said, I have to be careful not to say, okay, I don’t have to practice anymore.
But when I know what scenes were rehearsing at rehearsal, I will listen to those scenes during the day and on my way to that rehearsal.
And then when I go home, sometimes I will still listen to lines.
But other times I’m like, okay, I’ve just done these lines.
I have a 35-minute or 40-minute drive home, depending.
I’m going to listen to a podcast, or I’m going to listen to music.
It’s so joyful to me when I listen to a podcast or music right now, because I do spend so much time listening to those lines.
And it’s fun to remember how great it is to listen to other things.
I almost never subject my family to listening to my recorded lines when they’re in the car with me.
But when I’m driving solo, yeah, that’s what I’m going to play first.
Tonight I have band practice, and I wasn’t supposed to have theater practice, but now we’re going to have theater rehearsal, too, just over Zoom.
We’re going to just run some lines.
Great.
I’ve got no problem with that.
Tomorrow, I don’t have rehearsal at all.
I’m going to go see a show.
I’m going to see a production of Scrooge that the director is playing Scrooge in.
The director of the show I’m in is playing Scrooge in this production of Scrooge.
This theater where I’m going to see it, they’ve done this production for like 40 straight years or something.
And once you get cast in a role, you can keep that role until you decide to give it up.
So that’s what I’m doing.
Also, totally unrelated, Rivian released Borealis, which is a purple edition Rivian today.
As you may recall, purple is my favorite color, and I desperately want that purple Rivian.
I’m not going to get that purple Rivian, but man, I love my light blue Rivian.
It’s a very cool color, but that purple Rivian is sweet.
Man, oh man, everything should be purple.
I think that’s all I have for today.
I’m trying to be more thoughtful about not padding these episodes to be five minutes.
If I’m done talking at three minutes and 41 seconds, I should just stop, right?
Right.
Anyway, I hope you’re having a wonderful Wednesday, and yeah, you be good out there.
Lex.
