Three Unique Improv Shows. Well.
The most money I ever made as an improviser, at least the most money I ever made as an improviser for improvising, was when I was doing that work as a fake CEO for a company.
If you remember when I was being the character of Justin, who was the CEO of a non-existent company called Status Quo, that one ended up paying me a pretty decent amount.
And there was a little bit of scripted stuff, but there was so much unscripted stuff that I had to do at in-person events.
I would go to these conferences and expo halls and be a fake CEO in this booth that pretended we were a real company.
It was great.
But over the weekend, Your Daily Lex, I participated in three unique improv shows, each of which paid me.
And when I say three unique improv shows, well, here’s what I mean.
On Saturday night, yes, I was part of a comedy sports show, and usually we do comedy sports shows in our theater.
But this one was a travel show where we went to a 55-and-up community that had booked us.
And it was a good show.
They sold it out.
They had a bunch of people there.
It was like 150-something people attending.
We were very funny.
I was very pleased.
It was one of those things where you could tell that they were impressed and that they loved you, and I got like some nice whoops when they were calling us off at the end, so I was all very pleased.
And that went well.
And I got paid.
Fantastic.
Then the next day, I was Sherlock on Sunday in two different performances of the oh shit Sherlock show that I’ve done once before.
And in each case, everybody else has a script.
I don’t, and I’m playing Sherlock Holmes.
And they ask you to play it as yourself.
They don’t want a British accent, which is a real shame if you ask me.
They don’t want you to be like a Sherlock character.
They want you to basically be you as Sherlock.
And this was two new mysteries from the two I had done before.
And it’s not an escape room.
If you don’t solve the case, it’s okay.
And in fact, I did not solve the second crime correctly, but that’s okay.
I blame them.
But it was a lot of fun.
It was, you know, in some cases, genuinely, like truly hilarious.
I was very pleased with myself.
I was very impressed with everybody else.
Like, the show sets you up to be funny, and it was funny.
And they, all the scripted actors did great, and they have to, you know, improvise along with me too.
But it went really well.
And the second show, you know, at one point somebody comes to visit me and Watson in our apartment and starts presenting gifts, and he’s got a squeaky toy.
He’s like, Well, this is for Fido.
Where’s Fido?
Fido.
And I’m like, Oh, I’m sorry.
Fido died.
And he’s like, How?
And I simply pointed to Watson, and it became a runner for that entire show that Watson shot dogs.
And it doesn’t sound as funny now when I’m telling you, but believe me, it was really funny.
Anyway, so I got paid for all those shows.
A couple hundred bucks, man.
300 bucks, actually, with tips, $371 for the weekend in improv.
And that might not be retirement income, but it’s still awesome.
So there’s that.
My kitchen is nearing the finish line.
The guys doing the cabinet work for sure thought they were going to be done on Friday, and they’re like, Is it okay if we stay a little late to get this done?
No problem.
And then at seven, they’re like, Well, we’re nowhere near done, so I guess we’ll leave.
And then today they were here for many hours again finishing up their side.
So even funnier that they thought they had a chance of finishing on Friday.
However, that crew had also broken my sink on Thursday, and they agreed they would get the sink fixed on Friday, and that actually happened today, which meant that we had the weekend in a mostly finished new kitchen with no sink, which makes the kitchen less good.
Frankly, kitchens should have sinks.
That’s my opinion.
It’s a hot take, and I’m standing by it.
But the kitchen sink is now fixed.
For a while, we had everything but the kitchen sink, and now we have that too.
And they’re finishing up the tile stuff, and there’s still one step left.
We got to do some painting, and we haven’t even booked a painter yet, so we’ll figure that out.
We got the walls, the wall color.
isn’t necessarily perfect anymore with the new kitchen.
Lauren and I are having some debates, some disagreements about how much we should paint.
That’s not even getting to the color, but we’ll see.
We’ll figure it out one day at a time.
Or we won’t figure it out.
We’ll never agree, and we’ll just leave it exactly like it is, which kind of is a victory for me because I don’t even care for painting.
Anyway, that’s all.
It’s Tech Week because our show opens on Friday, and that means lots of rehearsals this week, going late and being tired.
So I got that going for me.
Anyway, I hope your week is off to a great start.
And if you haven’t yet checked out my brand new app, please do.
Go to lexfreidman.com slash—this is me stalling while I think of it—go to lexfreidman.com slash universe to check out my new game, The Universe Controlled, and go to lexontech.org to read a story about it because it was a lot of fun to make, and I’m proud of it.
I’m playing it a lot myself.
Anyway, goodbye, Lex.
