Audience Participation
I’m really close to having a day where there’s no contractors in my house.
I think that day might be tomorrow.
Your daily Lex.
I was just thinking about how funny it is that this show has a theme song.
And, like, not that the theme song is so long, but, you know, taking up several seconds in a podcast that’s four and a half to five and a half minutes is funny.
Anyway, the kitchen is essentially done.
We’re gonna have to paint the walls.
They got a little bit damaged, and, like, I maybe said this already, Lauren doesn’t love the color of the kitchen walls with everything else, so we gotta paint it.
But everything else is done.
All the tiling is done.
All the cabinets are done.
It looks great.
We’re very pleased.
But alongside the kitchen stuff, there was also the shower stuff.
And the shower stuff was, in short, my shower in the primary bathroom, there was a crack in the tile, which kept getting worse, and thus there was leakage, and leaking is bad.
And the solution, according to the tile guy, who I asked, who was working in the kitchen, was replace the tile at the base of the shower.
Then, well, first remove it all, then check and see if you need a new shower pan, and that test should be completed today.
And he thinks it actually looks good, that we do not have a problem, which is wonderful.
So it was just the cracked tile, and that once we repair that with brand new tile that we bought, that the problem will go away.
I’ll know that for sure today.
But if that’s true, then he has to actually do that shower tiling, and that’s one more day, which could be as early as today.
And then I don’t need anybody else in my house.
No, he’ll probably come back tomorrow.
If he does it today, which is a big if, he’ll come back tomorrow to do grouting.
But soon, soon I’ll have a day where I don’t have to deal with contractors in my house.
And all the contractors we had are very nice.
Some of them are chattier than others.
One of them, the oldest one, who did a lot of the work.
is an Eagles fan, and so he wanted to talk about the Eagles with me.
But it’s not a fun time to talk about the Eagles, so I didn’t really want to talk about the Eagles with him.
Also, I wanted to do my life.
Anyway, I have a day today that’s one of those days where you look at it ahead of time and you’re like, wow, this day is going to be too busy.
This day is going to be challenging, and that’s definitely the case.
There’s nothing I can do about it.
The day is the day, but I wish it were easier than it looks like it will be.
Lauren and I have had late nights every night because of being in tech rehearsal for the show we’re in, which opens on Friday.
And this is my first time doing a show at this theater.
And what I knew about this theater going in is they have some specific craziness internally, which I guess all theaters do.
But this one I’d heard about some of the drama, which I won’t get into, but it’s funny.
Very specific rules about things you can’t say in this theater, things you can’t ask, and people who are in charge of certain things who everybody is afraid of.
I’m like, I’m a grown man.
I’m just going to do what I want, but it’s still funny to observe it all.
But anyway, the thing that is the bummer, I guess, is the ticket sales are not great.
It was a three-weekend show.
They canceled the third weekend because ticket sales weren’t good enough, and they wanted to push everybody to the first two weekends instead.
And they’ve done okay at promoting it now, although they were slow to promote it, but they’ve sold a third of the tickets.
Actually, they’ve sold less than a third of the tickets.
The theater holds 350 people, and when I’m looking at some of the…
Upcoming shows.
Opening night has 134 tickets sold, which is about 38%.
And then the matinee the next day has 115.
Then the Saturday night show has 87.
So there are shows that are more than a third sold, and there are shows that are less than a third sold.
But doing a show in a theater that can support 350 people for 78 people, which is currently the lowest sold show, that’s not as fun as it could be, especially when it’s a comedy.
You want a lot of people there because they all help each other laugh.
So hopefully that gets better.
At least the opening show is, you know, it’s not embarrassing, right?
Like, they’ll fill up the theater even though there will be empty seats.
Like, there will be plenty of people in there, and hopefully you get some word of mouth that then keeps selling seats, because that part’s the bummer.
Like, I would just do improv.
I love not having to learn lines.
I love being able to make stuff up as I go along, whatever.
I love not having to memorize.
But I also love performing for an audience, and so I do community theater in large part so I can have a bigger audience to perform for.
A sold-out comedy sports show is going to be 50 people, and we don’t sell them all out.
So I count on these community theater shows to bring in audiences, and this one is, it’s not mortifying, but it’s not great.
So, hey, if you’re listening to this and you live locally, why not get tickets to go see Noises Off at Spring Lake Theater in New Jersey?
Anyway, I think that’s all I got.
Also, just to let you know, the Tile guy is late.
He’s been on time every single day, and today he is late.
He said he’ll be here by 9, and I’m recording this at 9:12.
Anyway, I hope you’re having a wonderful Wednesday, and more soon.
Lex.
