Top Four
I listened to a conversation on a podcast this week where the hosts were talking about their four favorite movies.
Most of them did not actually get to four favorite movies, so I was thinking, what an interesting number, and what a challenge it would be to come up with my four favorite movies.
I have not prepped.
I’m going to play the theme song, and then we’re going to think about and share what are my four favorite movies.
We’ll see.
Your Daily Lex.
I know My Cousin Vinny is on the list.
These are not going to be ranked, but My Cousin Vinny is one of my absolutely favorite movies of all time.
So it’s there.
Then it gets trickier.
The reality is I want to say Back to the Future, but Back to the Future 2 is my favorite Back to the Future movie, so I’m going to say Back to the Future 2, which I think is very controversial, and I’m fine with it.
I really, really love Notting Hill, but I don’t think it holds up because there’s no reason for Hugh Grant’s character to like Julia Roberts’ character because she’s mostly horrible to him throughout much of the movie.
It’s still so funny.
It’s such a good movie, but I’m going to leave it off, so I’m still at two.
I’m Back to the Future 2 and My Cousin Vinny.
I love the movie Quiz Show, but it’s a little bit too long, I think.
I love the movie Inside Out, and I think I’m going to put it on the list.
As I have said many times, I think Bing Bong’s sacrifice in that movie is the greatest sacrifice in cinema history.
So it’s unbelievable to me that there’s a kids’ movie slash animated movie on my list, but there we are.
It’s there.
What’s my fourth favorite movie?
What’s rounding out the top four?
I don’t know.
You can go to classics like The Godfather.
In many ways, I think I prefer Goodfellas to The Godfather.
Both excellent.
We don’t have to compare art, although I guess that’s what I’m doing in this exercise.
Some people expect me to choose something like UHF, but although I love UHF, it’s not one of my favorite movies.
And I frankly prefer Al’s movie Weird, the Al Yankovic story, over UHF, but that could be some recency bias.
I don’t know.
I love The American President, but I don’t think it holds up to repeat viewings as much as I’d like.
I love The Truman Show.
It’s excellent.
It could somehow fit its way into the top four, but I don’t think it’s going to be there.
What is going to be my fourth top movie?
When Harry Met Sally is really, really in the mix.
I think I’m now in a debate between When Harry Met Sally, Groundhog Day—oh, this is tricky—Big, Not Princess Bride, Galaxy Quest is great, but it doesn’t belong here.
That Thing You Do is great, but it doesn’t belong here.
Defending Your Life also.
I think I’m going to give it to Groundhog Day, but it’s really, really close, and I could be convinced to swap out Inside Out for When Harry Met Sally.
Billy Crystal is so unbelievably funny in When Harry Met Sally.
I just want to say this is a really difficult exercise.
Coming up with your four top movies is harder than three, and it’s harder than five.
I can’t explain it.
I don’t understand science.
I don’t understand math.
This is just how it is.
Let’s see.
Today I went on a walk with Sierra, which is very exciting.
I love every time she asks me if I want to go on a walk, I’ll go on a walk in the middle of my workday if she asks, as long as I can get the time free if I don’t have a meeting, because like I’ve talked about on the show before, it’s time I can’t get back.
You know, she’s going to college next year.
Insane.
She’s already submitted a bunch of applications.
She’s got a couple more.
It’s a whole thing.
Oh geez, I just realized another huge question, which is four favorite TV shows.
Man, oh man, oh man, oh man.
Four favorite TV shows.
I’m gonna have to include The West Wing.
It’s probably Breaking Bad.
Hmm.
I just did a list of like my 10 or 20 favorite shows, but going to four is so tricky.
I think it’s probably Curb Your Enthusiasm.
And that fourth one, man, that is tough.
Could be The Good Place, could be Pluribus, could be Severance.
If forced right now to pick, oh, could be Taskmaster.
Jeez.
If I had to choose right now, I think I would go with Pluribus because I would drop everything to watch another episode of Pluribus.
So yeah, there you go.
Anyway, it’s Thursday.
I have time in my day tomorrow to potentially go see—you can see everything, the Nathan Fielder Elizabeth Holmes documentary—in the middle of the day, and I might do it.
I have a complicated Friday, but I might do it anyway because I really want to see it, and I don’t know when else I could see it until it’s on streaming.
All right, I think that’s a nice hodgepodge of an episode of your Daily Lex.
I hope you’re having a nice hodgepodge of a day.
Goodbye.
Lex.
